Gorgeous Greens & Dove Whites...

Tungnath or Lord of Peaks (literally), the third temple of Panch Kedar, i.e., Tritiya Kedar, is just three and a half km away from the mini Switzerland of India, Chopta.

And if you are a nature lover, trek another 1.5 km to have a wonderful 360-degree view of sky-piercing Himalayas from Chandershila (approx 4090 mts above sea level). It is believed that Lord Rama too meditated at Chandrashila peak.

Since the trek lies in the restricted forest zone of Kedarnath wildlife sanctuary, the journey runs through dense woodlands with panoramic views of forty-one Himalayan peaks such as Chaukhamba, Trishul, Ganesh Parbat, Meru, Sumeru, Bandarpunch, Nilkanth, Nanda Devi, Panchachuli, Kedarnath etc.

Tungnath, believed to be around 5000 years old, is the highest Shiva temple in the world.

HISTORY*

The Tunganath is one of the Panch(five) Kedar temples built by the Pandavas. The legend states that Maharishi Ved Vyasa advised the Pandavas that during MAHABHARATA, they were guilty of killing their own cousins, the Kauravas. This act could be pardoned only by Lord Shiva. Consequently, the Pandavas went in search of Shiva who was avoiding them since he was convinced of the wrongdoings of Pandavas. In order to keep away from them, Shiva took the form of a bull and went into hiding at Guptakashi, where Pandavas chased him. But later Shiva’s body in the form of bull’s body parts resurfaced at five different locations that represent the "Panch Kedars" where Pandavas built temples of Lord Shiva at each location, to worship and venerate, seeking his pardon and blessings. Each one is identified with a part of his body...

UKHIMATH
Ukhimath or Okhimath is a famous Hindu pilgrimage site. During winters, the idols from Kedarnath temple and Madhyamaheshwar are brought at the Omkareshwar Temple, Ukhimath and worshipped here for six winter months.

According to Hindu Mythology*, Wedding of Usha (Daughter of Vanasur) and Anirudh (Grandson of Lord Krishna) was solemnized here. By name of Usha, this place was earlier known as Ushamath. Besides puja of Lord Kedarnath, year-round puja of Lord Omkareshwar is performed here.

Ukhimath can be used as a central destination for visiting MADHMAHESHWAR (Second kedar), TUNGNATH (Third kedar) and Deoria Tal (a natural freshwater lake) and many such picturesque places.

ROUTE SUMMARY

#2. Delhi-Meerut-Muzaffarnagar-Roorkee-haridwar-kotdwar- Satpuli - Jwalpa Devi

A revered siddhpeeth, Jwalpa Devi temple is located at the road that connects to Pauri and Kotdwar via Satpuli. It is a believed that Jawalpa Devi is an incarnation of Durga, the Goddess of power. Situated on the banks of the Nawalika River, during Janmashtami and Navratri, this temple is one of the busiest destinations of the area bustling with devotional activities. The temple is flocked by devotees around the year, especially the unmarried girls, who pray here to get the groom of their choice. This temple is also known among the locals for helping people with 'free of cost' holy marriages.

As a normal practice during hill's pilgrimage, here too one has to climb around 100 stairs to reach the temple from the main road. There are few small eateries and Prasad shops near the temple.

HISTORY*
According to the legend in SKANDHA PURANA, Sachi was the daughter of asur-raj (demon king) Pulom. She prayed here to the goddess to please her to get Devraj Indra as the husband. The Goddess appeared here in the form of Deeptimaan Jwaleshwari (the Great Holy Fire) and Sachi's wish was fulfilled. Hence the name JWALPA DEVI...

...so, the belief that unmarried girls get fine grooms as per their wish, just like Indraani (Sachi), seems well founded.

Adi Shankaracharya too is believed to have visited and prayed here and had Darshan of the Goddess.

PILGRIMAGE in HIMALAYAS

Respect Nature. She Reciprocates!

Mountains are the World’s Water Towers. Water, stocked as Glaciers, flows downwards in form of rivers. Besides satisfying our thirst, it also sustains most of the food production in addition to the maintenance of various green belts that generate the basic requirement of our life, the oxygen.

My birthplace, Delhi is a wonderful place, just a few hundred kilometers away from world's most famous water towers, The Towering Himalayas. And whenever we want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city we head straight into the lush green wilds of the Himalayas to breathe easy in the lap of raw nature. With an almost endless list of destinations, blessed with delightful landscapes and colourful trails for all tastes, capacities & capabilities, Himalaya, we believe is the abode of Gods. However, spending time in such serene surroundings brings its own responsibilities too...

...avoid littering around. Use eco-friendly produce during the journey.
