SURKANDA DEVI TEMPLE
Mounted at a staggering 10,000 ft (3,030 mts) above the sea level, SURKANDA DEVI TEMPLE is only about 300 km from Delhi.

The temple is situated on a hilltop and can be reached after a trek of around two km from Kaddukhal, a village situated on Chamba-Dhanaulti road. Surkanda Devi temple is one of the 51 Shaktipeth temples.

Stalls selling Prashad and offerings are in plenty at the foothill of the temple.
The climb to the top is quite steep. So, even during this moderate trek, a lot of breaks are required to the city guys like us who don't walk much normally. But in the bargain, one can enjoy some unforgettable and wonderful views of lush green slopes, decorated with terraced farms and dense woodlands.

Once at the top, besides the darshan, a 360-degree view of serene surroundings including, the panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayan Peaks like Nandadevi, Chaukhamba, Gourishankar, Kedardome, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri etc. is a good remuneration for the joyful labour. A horse too can be hired for the climbs.

A colourful bazaar at the base of the temple, with decorated shops selling pooja items, idols, toys, artificial jewellery etc is another center of attraction. Amidst lively surroundings, this small yet vibrant market has a number of small eateries & tea-stalls where you can relax your tired limbs when you return back from the trek.

Here, the Ganga Dusshera festival is celebrated every year between May and June and attracts a lot of devotees.

NOTE* : There are 51 SHAKTI PEETHs linking to 51 alphabets in Sanskrit. Each Temple has a shrine for Shakti and Kaalbhirava. Most Shakti and Kaalbhirava at different Shakti peeths have different names. Bhirava is the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva associated with annihilation.

HISTORY*
According to the mythology, Sati was the wife of Lord Shiva and daughter of the king Daksha. Daksha was unhappy over his daughter's choice of the husband. So, while performing Grand Yagna, Daksha intentionally avoided inviting Shiva and Sati. Feeling betrayed, Sati threw herself into the fire of the yagna knowing that this would make the sacrifice impure (one of Maa Durga’s 108 names is Dakshyagnavinashini, which means-one who destroyed the yagna of Daksh).

When Lord Shiva came to know about the fate of Sati, he got extremely angry. He put Sati's burnt body over his shoulder and began his tandava, the dance of destruction. Demigods got worried and prayed to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu, with his Sudarshan Chakra, cut Sati's body into 52 parts which fell on the different places on the earth to become holy spots called Shakti Peeths. All these Shakti Peeths also have Lord Shiva in his Bhairav form. Surkanda Devi Temple is the place where the head of goddess Sati fell.

TOUR SUMMARY

Delhi - Gaziabad - Modinagar - Meerut - Muzaffarnagar Roorkee - Bhagwanpur - Chhutmalpur - Dehradun.

At a distance of about 500 mts from Dehradun Railway Station, Guru Ram Rai Gurudwara is situated in the heart of Dehradun city. It is a magnificent monument of great historical and religious significance. The city of Dehradun derives its name from the fact that Guru Ram Rai Ji set up his camp (dera) in the valley (dun) in 1676. This 'Dera'+'Dun', later on, became Dehradun. Baba Ram Rai was the eldest son among three children of the Seventh Sikh Guru, Guru Har Rai Ji.

Ram Rai Ji was born on Chaitrawadi Panchami, Tuesday, the fifth day from the Holi, in 1646 at Kiratpur in Punjab. In his memory, the JHANDA FAIR (flag festival) is celebrated here every year which begins on the day of his birthday, which incidentally, coincides with the day of his arrival at Dehradun in 1676. Large crowds of the followers assemble here to witness the annual flag changing ceremony. There is a long queue for booking the 'Flag Hoisting' and the waiting period is over 20-25 years.

For those also who study architectonics, this Gurudwara is a classic amalgamation of Islamic architectural style with Hindu architecture. Have a look and appreciate the rare mural paintings of Rajasthani, Mughal and Pahari style. A picture-perfect setup of huge sarover (pond), high minarets and round domes with the portraits of Hindu mythological characters, saints, sages, Sikh gurus and paintings of flowers, leaves, birds etc. on the walls of the shrine reflect a mixed culture and spiritual harmony.

Besides being widely famous for its structural beauty & religious values, it is also known to provide quality education and healthcare. It has a well-equipped 1000 bed Hospital, 150 seats of MBBS Medical College, College of Nursing, College of Paramedical & Allied Health Sciences, PG College, an Institute of Science & Technology, B.Ed. and M.Ed. College, College of Agriculture, many schools, a Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya and the list goes on...besides the routine Langar(community kitchen). Presently, Shri Guru Ram Rai Education Mission, established in 1952, is running over 122 educational Institutions.

HISTORY*
Aurangzeb, the Mughal emperor, was made to believe by the members of his Court, that Guru Har Rai supported Dara Shikoh (half-brother of Aurangzeb) for the throne. So, Aurangzeb ordered Guru Har Rai to come to Delhi. Guru Har Rai Ji, instead, sent Ram Rai, his elder son, to Delhi. Ram Rai satisfied all the concerns & queries of the Emperor. To impress and soothe him further, Ram Rai Ji misinterpreted some of the Guru Nanak Dev Ji's writings, which was strictly forbidden.

Though he managed to impress Aurangzeb, his father Guru Har Rai Ji forbade all Sikhs from ever associating with Ram Rai. Therefore, instead of Ram Rai, his 5 years old younger brother, Harkrishan was throned as the next Guru at Kiratpur.

At Delhi, the Mughal Emperor was highly impressed by the miraculous powers of Guru Ram Rai Ji. Hence he asked Raja of Garhwal, Fateh Shah to extend all possible help to Sri Guru Ram Rai Ji. Initially, a Gurudwara was built in Dhamawala. The construction of the present building of Darbar Sahib was completed in 1707.

Parkasheshwar Mahadev Mandir

TOUR SUMMARY
Delhi - Ghaziabad - Modinagar - Meerut - Muzaffarnagar Roorkee - Bhagwanpur - Chhutmalpur - Dehradun - Shri Prakasheshwar Mahadev Temple.

SHRI PRAKASHESHWAR MAHADEV Shri Parkasheshwar Mahadev Mandir located in Dehradun district, is Lord Shiva's Temple. No Donation in any form is accepted here. Generally, space in front of the temple remains quite busy, hence parking for the car is a bit of an issue.

It was more than 20 yrs back, perhaps, when we were told that there is a temple on the way to Mussoorie, where a very tasty kheer along with hot tea is offered as parsad and all this with a serious restriction on any kind of offerings or donations. The popularity of the temple has grown manifolds since then. With ringing cash counters, the show is perhaps being run by selling Gems, stones and other faith-related products adjacent to the temple premises.

It's a reasonably good place for a break on the way to Mussoorie.

Approx. DISTANCE fromDelhi - 180 kms

TOUR SUMMARY
Delhi - Ghaziabad - Modinagar - Meerut - Khatauli - Muzaffarnagar - Roorkee.

PIRAN KALIYAR SHAREEF DARGAH
This Dargah is not exactly in the hills. Still, I am including this wonderful holy destination in this post. The reason is simple. While moving towards the land of Gods, at around 20 kms before Haridwar and 7-8 kms away from Roorkee, this is a 'not to be missed' internationally recognized serene shrine.

Situated on the banks of sacred Ganga canal in Kaliyar village, Piran Kaliyar Shareef is the Dargah of 13th-century's Sufi saint Alauddin Ali Ahmed Sabir Kalyari also known as Sarkar Sabir Pak or Sabir Kaliyari.

A symbol of coexistence and respected among all religions, this wonderful Mazar (graveyard) of this Muslim saint, is famous for its mystical powers to fulfil ones desires. 'Urs' is organized annually to celebrate the saint's death anniversary.

You can experience the power of magical Sufi songs sung by the local artists on Thursdays, i.e., jumme raat (the night before Jummah, which is Friday). There is a festival like atmosphere on nauchandi too (the first Thursday night after full moon).

There are many shops around the place to buy the offerings etc. A budget rest house run by GMVN is also available here.

HISTORY*
Sabir Kaliyari was a successor to Baba Fareed (1188–1280) and the first in the Sabiriya branch of Chishti Order. Sabir Kaliyari's mother, Jamila Khatun was the elder sister of Baba Fareed. She brought him to Pakpattan (now in Pakistan) in 1204 to Baba Fareed.

Later, on being appointed as the protector of Kaliyar Sharif by Baba Fareed, Sabir Kaliyar reached Kaliyar Sharif in 1253 AD and he stayed at here for the rest of his life. Slowly, a village by the name of Piran Kaliyar developed around the shrine.

This Dargah was built by Ibrahim Lodhi, the Sultan of Delhi in 1517.

TAIL-PIECE
According to a news item published in THE HINDU on August 10, 2002 :
A report by IIT Roorkee claimed that the first train in the country ran between Roorkee and Piran Kaliyar on December 22, 1851. This fresh claim proves wrong the earlier claim that the first train started its journey in 1853 from Mumbai to Thane.
India's first steam engine, Mary Lind, (specially shipped from England) ran here, between Roorkee and Piran Kaliyar. This railway line was built to carry soil used for the construction of the Upper Ganges Canal aqueduct.

PILGRIMAGE in HIMALAYAS

Respect Nature. She Reciprocates!

Mountains are the World’s Water Towers. Water, stocked as Glaciers, flows downwards in form of rivers. Besides satisfying our thirst, it also sustains most of the food production in addition to the maintenance of various green belts that generate the basic requirement of our life, the oxygen.

My birthplace, Delhi is a wonderful place, just a few hundred kilometers away from world's most famous water towers, The Towering Himalayas. And whenever we want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city we head straight into the lush green wilds of the Himalayas to breathe easy in the lap of raw nature. With an almost endless list of destinations, blessed with delightful landscapes and colourful trails for all tastes, capacities & capabilities, Himalaya, we believe is the abode of Gods. However, spending time in such serene surroundings brings its own responsibilities too...

...avoid littering around. Use eco-friendly produce during the journey.
